august (comin' round again)You know that feeling when you've been sitting in traffic for an hour and finally it's your exit and there's nothing but open road in front of you? Oh yeah, that's how august has been for me so far. What you missed in September...1. Weather (the best way to start a conversation)
2. School (is awesome) 3. Baseball (and spandex) 4. Employment (or lack thereof) 5. Concerts (not mine) 6. Marathons (are hard to run when it's 88 degrees outside...well, they're hard to run anyway) 1. Alright, you'll have to forgive me, I've had extraneous amounts of caffeine this afternoon and I'm about to go fill my oversized cup again. I just really enjoy coffee on a rainy day, and my system isn't as used to it since the days here have refused to be rainy till just now. My first month in Boston was everything I expected and then some heat. The humidity is like whoa... I thought I was back home. 2. Anyway, I'm just trucking away at school. Suddenly half-diminished chords are -7 (b5) 's and I'm not the only girl with a guitar! (though I think I may be the only one with a ukulele) I love being able to fit in, especially in a place where it seems like everyone is trying to stand out. 3. I need a job. There are too many Starbucks here and with every caramel macchicato, I can hear my debit card scream in pain. Any helpful, non-condescending hints are appreciated. (as are checks and cash) 4.In other news, the Red Sox are better than your favorite team. They'll be my favorite as long as Papelbon doesn't dance around in his spandex anymore... or maybe if he keeps doing it, I can't decide. 5. I love the Northeast, I've seen Josh Ritter, Edie Carey, Ellis, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Josh Ritter is the nicest person in the music business. He stuck around forever after a concert last week to give everyone hugs and sign anything we put in his hands. If you haven't heard his new cd go here and listen. Edie Carey is the other nicest person in the music business. If you don't know her, fix that. 6. Finally, and thank you for reading this far, the Chicago Marathon was yesterday. It was ridiculously hot and humid there while over 45,000 people tried to reach their goals. Both of my parents and one of their friends ran the race. Thankfully, they are all well even though the course was closed halfway through the race and my mom was unable to get to the finish line. 300 people were hospitalized and one man was killed due to the heat. My thoughts are with these runners and their families. With such a great goal in their minds, and many of them running for charity (like my mom), it's certainly a disappointment that the weather wouldn't cooperate. I'm so proud to have people with such tenacity in my family. That's all for now! Have a beautiful day and watch your caffeine intake. Kaitlin The Beautiful Mistake EPWell, it's been an exciting week! I've been rolling up all my shirts and praying that my suitcase full of shoes is under 50 pounds. And, in other news, I have managed to finally compile my EP! It has four home studio recordings, two of which were recorded by David Murphy, and one live recording of "The Landi Song" from the Blue Moon show last Friday.
It's entitled "The Beautiful Mistake EP" for a couple reasons. First, the phrase is from my favorite line in "World of Wonder" : "It's a question of reason and one of belief. Is this a miracle or a beautiful mistake?" Secondly, I've been so amazed by the way this project, and my career thus far have come together. And that they exist at all. Feels like one big, beautiful mistake. August MentionablesAh. Aaaaaahhhhhhhhhh.
Big sighs for the beauty that has been August. I'm so happy to have this easy new site up! Now, I'll never have to learn HTML!! I just got back from a week in Lyons, CO at Planet Bluegrass' Song School. It was my second year there, so seeing all the familiar yet forgotten faces was like finding a 20 in my winter coat. I managed to squeeze a few songs out of my ukulele this year and I am very excited to share them with you! Speaking of which... my last show in Nebraska is this Friday, the 24th at 7:30 pm at the Blue Moon in Hastings. I'll be recording, so I'll have something like and EP to leave behind. That disc will be available for pre-order at the show. I'll be playing a few open mics in Hastings and Grand Island that weekend surrounding the show as well, so keep your eyes open! Thanks for visiting the site! Peace, Kaitlin |
